The First Night

It’s my first night in my new apartment in Sydney, Australia. The walls are remarkably beige, and the carpet matches. The entire place, in fact, is precisely the color of my boyfriend’s skin, and as such I keep joking that if he were to curl in a corner sans clothing he might possibly disappear.

It’s our first night here. We’re 16 hours ahead of America’s East Coast, which makes it just shy of 10 pm at the moment. Although we have moved into our apartment, our “move” consisted mostly of bags full of clothing. We have no furniture. We have no dishes, no blankets, no chairs to sit on, no fridge to chill our celebratory wine. I can only describe the situation as urban camping. Beige urban camping.

I still don’t know what we’re going to make our bed out of tonight. But we’re here. That’s enough.

The night’s been lazy. I’m sitting propped against a wall, drinking Riesling from the bottle (no glasses) and eating from a box of chocolates that we found on our doorstep. Apparently a boy in Boston sent them to us to ease our move. I was speechless when I discovered this, overwhelmingly touched.

The sliding door to our balcony is open, letting the night air push slowly in. Tomorrow I have class again. Tomorrow I find a job and join the art collective and the writer’s society. Tomorrow I do a thousand things that must be done in daylight.

Right now, this night is enough.
